This page sets out how railway rail is made and checked. It is general information about the process, provided so that buyers can read a specification with confidence.

Manufacturing Process

Manufacturing is carried out at Pangang. Details of each stage are provided below; further documentation is available on request.

RollingThe steel is cast into blooms, reheated, and passed through a series of grooved rolls that build up the rail section progressively. Each pass brings the bloom closer to the finished profile.

Heat TreatmentFor head-hardened rail the head is reheated and quenched, so the running surface ends up harder than the rest of the section while the web and foot stay tough enough to carry the bending loads.

InspectionDimensional checks, surface inspection and straightness measurement run alongside production, so a section that drifts out of tolerance is caught before it leaves the line.

TestingMechanical and chemical testing confirms that the steel meets the grade it was ordered to. Results are recorded against the heat number, so a delivery can be traced back to the cast it came from.

Quality DocumentsEach consignment is issued with inspection documents recording chemical composition, mechanical properties and dimensions, so the buyer can check the rail against the purchase specification.
